Spring is here, and the perfect time to reassess, organise, and refresh your skincare routine. With such an extreme change in seasonal weather from winter to spring, seemingly overnight, this is the ideal time to declutter, reorganize, and reassess your skincare for a more simplified and effective routine.
This year, it’s not just about spring cleaning your home; it’s time to do your best Marie Kondo on your skincare and beauty products too.
I jotted down my Spring Skin Cleaning tips for you to try, but remember, if you are overwhelmed with to many products in your bathroom cabinet, when to use them, or how to get the best benefit from your investments or are ready to refresh – simply book your redeemable skin consultation at the Skin Studio here and bring your product swag with you, and we can do it together while I educate you along the way.
There’s nothing I love more than a bathroom cupboard refresh and clean-out; it’s so cleansing… sorry for the pun! Just couldn’t help myself.
Why Spring Cleaning Your Skincare Routine matters.
- Seasonal Changes: Just as your wardrobe shifts from heavy winter layers to lighter attire, your skin requires different care as the weather warms up. Spring often brings increased humidity and more direct sun, which can affect how your skin behaves and reacts to your current products.
- Remove Expired Products: Over time, skincare products can lose their effectiveness or even become harmful post expiry. Spring is the ideal time to go through your skincare stash and toss or put aside anything that is expired or that you haven’t used in a while, no point hanging on to these.
- Evaluate Your Skin’s Needs: Your skin’s requirements change with the seasons. A spring skincare refresh allows you to assess whether your current products are still suitable for your skin type and current concerns. Certain weights or richness may be too much during these months, so can be parked or used in the PM, while essentials such as sunscreen, exfoliants, or hydrators may need to be incorporated or reordered.
- Adopt Skinimalism: Focus on skincare recommended by professionals and keep the products you use religiously and love. Quality over quantity plus skin routine can be transformative for the skin and the mind, reducing waste as well.
- Intentional Skincare: Less can often be more, especially when you feel overwhelmed by the options or by what you already have. Your skin can also be overwhelmed by too many products, leading to reactions, dryness, or an impaired barrier.
Tips to Spring Clean your Skin Routine.
- Assess Your Current Routine: Take a close look at your daily skincare regimen. Note any changes in your skin condition—dryness, breakouts, or sensitivity. This will help you identify what needs to change. Note the products you use and enjoy, as well as the ones you haven’t touched for 3–6 months and why. Did they cause a reaction, or were they too thick or stingy? If you are not happy with how your skin behaves when you use these products (despite their great name or reputation), this is the time to cull, replace, or omit the dusty, non-effective products with seasonally suited ones.
- Switch Up Your Routine: As the weather gets warmer and humidity increases, our skin tends to be a little more reactive. Those heavier, richer winter faves may be parked away (or used sparingly or after a day in the sun) or gifted to another part of the body, such as your neck and décolletage – don’t let them go to waste just to end up in next spring’s expired bin.
- Declutter: Channel your inner Marie Kondo;) and make three bins or bags and mark them 1. Bin (for expired items) 2. Gift (to a friend or another part of the body) and 3. Keep. Check labels for expiration dates or signs of spoilage, such as changes in texture or smell. Let go of products that didn’t work for you or that you don’t use that are still in date and pop in the bin marked Gift.
- Check Expiration Dates: If there are any products, you’re not using that are still in date, consider gifting them to another area of your body or to a friend. Pass it along, you will feel good and the planet will thank you too – decluttering as you go. Bring the due-to-expire products to the front of your shelves or drawers to prompt you to use these first.
- How to Check Expiry: Your beauty and skincare products should have a tiny symbol that looks like an open jar with a number and “M” (M=month) in it, for example, 12M. This is a period-after-opening symbol that identifies how long a product is useful and stable. An expired product or an unstable product beyond not working effectively may also cause reactions and harbor bacteria.
- Clean Your Beauty Tools: Give them an extra good deep clean with an antibacterial face or body wash. We all know we should do it, but it’s one of those things that slips your mind, but is super important, and here’s why! Skincare tools are ripe for harboring bacteria (especially sponges and brushes) which can cause many skin issues, such as acne cosmetica or, most horrifyingly but not as uncommon as you might think – staph infections! That should get you cleaning :0
- Use Your Best Products: Use your best, most expensive and highest quality products today. No point saving them for special occasions only to discover next spring that they are half used and expired.
- Sunscreen: Make sunscreen a non-negotiable part of your routine. Using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 at the least every morning and reapplying every two hours is essential when in direct sunlight. SPF face spritzers are terrific for a top-up or if you don’t want to interfere with your makeup – but remember they are only suitable for intermittent sun exposure.
- Wide-brimmed hats over caps: These stylish accessories provide better coverage for your face, neck, and ears than the standard cap, significantly reducing UV exposure and helping to prevent sunburn and skin damage. They should be used in conjunction with sunscreen for optimal skin safety.
- Seasonal Facial: If you’re not already booked for your facial every 4 to 6 weeks, consider booking a Seasonal Facial at the start or end of each season. This is a fabulous way to deep cleanse and rejuvenate your skin for the Season ahead, addressing current concerns while promoting a balanced and radiant complexion. Jane recommends the Studio Luminosity Facial seasonally https://www.skinstudiobyjane.com.au/treatments/ or any facial from the Bespoke menu.
